All About Gold
Everything you need to know about the gold we work with — karats, colors, and how to choose.
Understanding Gold Karats
The karat tells you how much pure gold is in the piece:
- 24k is pure gold (99.9%) — rich color but too soft for everyday jewellery.
- 18k is 75% gold — the sweet spot for fine jewellery: rich color and good durability.
- 14k is 58.5% gold — harder and more affordable, great for daily wear.
- 10k is 41.7% gold — the legal minimum to be called gold in Canada; toughest and most budget-friendly.
Higher karat means richer color but softer metal. Lower karat means paler, harder, and more affordable.
Yellow Gold
The classic. Alloyed with copper and silver for strength. 18k yellow has the warmest color; 14k is slightly paler and harder.
White Gold
Gold alloyed with white metals (palladium or nickel), then usually finished with rhodium plating for that bright white shine. The rhodium wears over time — we can re-plate it to bring back the finish.
If you have a nickel allergy, ask about palladium white gold instead.
Rose Gold
Gold alloyed with copper — more copper means a pinker tone. Romantic, warm, and flattering on most skin tones.
Sterling Silver
We also carry a small selection of sterling silver pieces — 92.5% pure silver. Beautiful and affordable, but softer than gold, and it tarnishes over time. Store it well and polish regularly; our Jewellery Care Products make it easy.
Which Gold Is Right for You?
- Daily-wear rings: 14k gold holds up best.
- Sensitive skin: 18k yellow gold has the highest gold content and the least alloy to react to.
- Warm skin tones tend to love yellow and rose gold; cooler tones often prefer white gold — but rules are made to be broken.
What About Platinum?
We don't carry platinum in store, but it can be made upon request — allow 4–5 weeks. Contact us to discuss a platinum piece.
